No Words
No Words
Overview
No Words is a single, finite social experiment examining how interpersonal connection forms when language is completely removed from communication.
Six participants will be paired and asked to communicate only through images in a private text‑message thread for 30 consecutive days. No words, text, symbols, audio, or symbolic substitutes of any kind are permitted.
The experiment is fully framed, tightly constrained, and designed to be published as a book.
Conceptual Frame
Many contemporary relationships now begin and develop without physical co‑presence. They unfold through private message threads where connection is shaped less by content than by timing, repetition, silence, and withdrawal.
During the first month of an online‑born connection, communication performs ongoing work.
Meaning accumulates slowly through sustained contact rather than singular moments of initiation.
No Words examines this early relational period by removing language entirely.
For thirty consecutive days, participants communicate only through images.
The experiment does not stage a beginning or simulate novelty.
It observes how contact is maintained and recalibrated over time when familiar linguistic tools are unavailable.
Participants enter with full knowledge of the experiment’s intent and constraints. There are no hidden rules.
It tests behavior under known constraint across duration.
No Words is not about producing images as art.
It is about how attention, pacing, and intimacy change when communication must persist day after day inside an ordinary channel without language.
What results is a record of relational maintenance: how people adapt or disengage when reassurance, efficiency, and narrative coherence are no longer available.
Structure of the Experiment
- 6 participants total
- 1 male/female pair
- 1 male/male pair
- 1 female/female pair
- Each pair communicates in a private text‑message thread
- All interaction occurs only inside that thread
- The experiment runs for 30 consecutive days without interruption
- This experiment is singular and will not be repeated
Pairings and initiation roles are determined by the organizers.
Core Constraints (Non‑Negotiable)
By applying, you acknowledge that participation requires strict adherence to the following constraints.
Communication
- Images only
- No text, captions, emojis, symbols, numbers, or letters
- No audio, music, voice notes, links, articles, or screenshots
- Images must be self‑created by you using your phone camera
- No memes, reaction images, or symbolic shorthand
Images replace words but language systems are not allowed to enter visually.
Self‑Representation
- No images of your face
- No images of your body or body parts (including hands, feet)
- No reflections, mirrors, shadows, silhouettes, or staged self‑portraits
- First‑person point‑of‑view images (what you are seeing or encountering) are allowed
Content Limits
- No nudity
- No sexually explicit imagery
- No images whose primary purpose is sexual display
Containment
- Absolutely no contact outside the experiment
- No in‑person meetings
- No phone calls
- No social media interaction
- No email, messaging apps, or third‑party communication
- No indirect signaling
All contact must occur only through the image‑only text thread.
Duration & Commitment
- Participation is for 30 consecutive days
- Early withdrawal is not permitted, except in cases of serious emergency
- Maximum 5 images per participant per day
- Both participants in each pair must send all images they choose to send
Completion is part of the experiment.
Documentation & Publication
Documentation is required.
- One participant per pair will submit daily screenshots of the full conversation thread
- Both participants will submit all image files they sent that day daily
- All materials will be used toward a published book
This book is not a supplementary form of documentation.
It is the final form of the work.
Who Should Apply
You may be a good fit if you:
- are comfortable with ambiguity and delay
- do not require immediate clarification or reassurance
- can follow strict constraints without negotiation
- can sustain attention and restraint over time
- are willing to be misunderstood
This experiment is not about visual skill, cleverness, or expression.

NO WORDS — Application — [First Name Last Name]
3. Email Body (Required)
The body of the email must include:
- Full name
- Age
- City and time zone
- Confirmation that you are available for 30 consecutive days
- Confirmation that you are willing to sign a participation agreement if selected
- A single sentence confirming that you have read and understand all constraints on this page
You may use the following language:

Attach one (1) original image responding to one (1) of the prompts below.
Choose one prompt only:
- “How was your day?”
- “What do you do for work?”

lastname_firstname_prompt.jpg
Example:
doe_jane_howwasyourday.jpg
6. Optional Attachment
You may include one optional PDF or text file (maximum one page) describing prior experience with long‑form, constraint‑based, or image‑based work.
This is optional.
Selection & Next Steps
- Exactly six participants will be selected
- Selected applicants will be contacted directly
- Selected applicants must sign a participation agreement before the experiment begins
- Not all applicants will receive a response
Final Note
This is not a collaborative project.
It is a request for deliberate participation under fixed conditions in a single, finite social experiment.
Careful reading and precise compliance are part of the evaluation.
